(AP) ? First Lt. Aaron Dunn deployed to Afghanistan in early March 2012. His 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was charged with engaging Taliban fighters in Kunar Province and mentoring Afghan government soldiers. Upon returning, here are some of his views.

Coming home:

"War and coming home are going to mean different things to each soldier. For me it was God and family. I get my security in life from my hope in God, and my companionship and support from my family. I really didn't worry too much during deployment, because of that faith."

Support for those serving:

"For a lot of soldiers, it's the family back home that drives them. Support from family and friends is very important. Support is also important from the American public.. Often times a simple thank you is enough."

The emotional toll:

"In my opinion, it's tougher on the families, especially after the unit takes a casualty.. I personally can't imagine waiting, not knowing if your loved one is alive or even all right, and having a panic each time a car drives by your driveway thinking it's the military chaplain and escort coming to see you."

Making up for the lost time with family:

"A lot of people seem to think that 'quality time' will make up for a long absence. It doesn't. Its 'quantity time' that does that. It is the time spent doing things that are fun, but also the time spent doing the daily chores, and other routines that firmly bring a family together. Emma was 5 months old when I deployed, and 14 months old when I returned. I was able to stay in touch with the family and had the luck to watch Emma begin to crawl via Skype."

Potential heir to $300 million fortune found dead

A long-lost relative of the reclusive heiress Huguette Clark, who could have inherited $19 million of her $300 million fortune, has been found dead under a Union Pacific Railroad overpass in Wyoming.

Children sledding found the body of Timothy Henry Gray, 60, Thursday afternoon in Evanston, a small mining town in southwestern Wyoming near the Utah border. The coroner said it appeared he died of hypothermia. The low temperature that day was 10 degrees, and had hit zero in the previous week. Lt. Bill Jeffers of the Evanston Police Department said there was no evidence of foul play, and Gray was wearing a light jacket. Gray's siblings said they hadn't heard from him since their?mother's funeral in 1990, when he disappeared without a word.??It wasn't clear whether Gray was living under the overpass, where transients have been known to camp.

Tim Gray was an adopted great-grandson of former U.S. Sen. William Andrews Clark, known as one of the copper kings of Montana, a banker, a builder of railroads and the founder of Las Vegas. The senator's youngest daughter, Huguette Clark, was a recluse who died in 2011 in New York City at age 104, after living in hospitals for 20 years while her palatial homes sat unused. Gray was her half great-nephew.

In her will, Huguette Clark left no money at all to her family, leaving it instead to?her nurse, goddaughter, attorney, accountant, hospital, doctor, favorite museum and various employees, as well as? to an art foundation to be set up at her oceanfront estate in Santa Barbara, Calif. ?None of her relatives had seen Clark in at least 40 years, though some had been in touch with her through holiday cards and occasional phone calls.

Nineteen of Clark's relatives have stepped forward to challenge her will in a New York court. A public administrator joined the challenge on behalf of Gray. When lawyers tried to find him to let him know about the Clark estate battle, they found his belongings had been abandoned in a storage locker, according to court records, and private investigators were not able to find him.

If the relatives win their court challenge, Gray's estate would be entitled to about $19 million before taxes, or 6.25 percent of Clark's copper mining fortune, which has been conservatively estimated at $307 million by the administrator of Huguette Clark's estate. If Gray, who apparently had no spouse or children, died without a will, his siblings would receive his share in addition to their own.

Gray was not using the money he already had. The coroner said Gray's wallet contained a cashier's check, from 2003, for "a significant amount."

Gray's older brother, Jerry, said Tim had worked as a cowboy and lived in the Rocky Mountain states.?"He was homeless essentially. If we had proper mental health services in this country, we could have been notified and known to do something."

Huguette Clark attracted the attention of NBC News in 2009 because of her vacant but well-manicured mansions and questions about the management of her money. The battle over her estate could go before a jury in 2013, though settlement talks have begun.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Adrian Peterson picked up the Minnesota Vikings and gave them a thrilling ride to the playoffs, where the next stop on this improbable journey is, yes, Green Bay.

This game was so full of action, intrigue and tension they're going to stage it again next weekend.

Peterson finished 9 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record, but he still powered the Vikings past the Packers 37-34 Sunday with 199 yards to set up a rematch at Lambeau Field in a first-round playoff game.

"I told myself to come into this game focused on one thing, and that's winning," Peterson said.

Peterson rumbled around the left side of the line for a 27-yard gain in the closing seconds, his career-high 34th carry exactly one year after reconstructive surgery on his left knee. That set up Blair Walsh's 29-yard field goal as time expired and put the Vikings (10-6) in the postseason after consecutive last-place finishes.

"For our guys to be as resilient as they were, it has you swelling with pride," coach Leslie Frazier said.

The division champion Packers (11-5) dropped to the NFC's No. 3 seed. Their five-game winning streak against the Vikings ended.

"I had a feeling that we had the game in the bag the whole game," Vikings cornerback Chris Cook said. "It was just a vibe that I had on the sideline, in how we were carrying ourselves."

Aaron Rodgers completed 28 of 40 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions, connecting with Jordy Nelson from 2 yards to tie the game with 2:54 remaining. But Christian Ponder threw for three scores, including one to Peterson.

Ponder went 16 for 28 for 234 yards, including a 65-yard zinger in stride to Jarius Wright midway through the fourth quarter that set up Ponder's third touchdown toss.

"It's disappointing. A lot of us wanted that extra week," Rodgers said.

Peterson finished with 2,097 yards, becoming the seventh player in NFL history to reach the 2,000 mark. He had to work for it, pulling out all the cutbacks, stutter-steps and spins he could find in his exceptional skill set. His longest run was only 28 yards against a defense geared to slow him down, and the first contact often came at, near or behind the line of scrimmage.

"It wasn't meant to happen, or it would've happened. Not to say it doesn't hurt, because it does," Peterson said of Dickerson's 28-year-old record. "But we came in here tonight and accomplished the ultimate goal, and that was getting a win and punching our ticket to the playoffs."

The Packers cut the lead to 27-24 late in the third quarter on a touchdown reception by James Jones. The on-field ruling was a fumble at the goal line, triggering an automatic review. Because the Packers threw the challenge flag after the replay process began, however, they were only penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, not prevented from benefiting from the overturned call. That's what happened to Detroit infamously on Thanksgiving, when a disputed score by Houston was prevented from review.

After posting a 9-23 record over the last two years, the Vikings made so many strides in 2012 that the season was already a success. But no NFL team would ever be satisfied by finishing in defeat against a division rival, and the emotion and energy behind the quest was palpable all afternoon.

"It took us a little while to adjust to the crowd noise, and we didn't get going," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That usually happens up here. This is a tough place to play, no doubt. We anticipated this being the loudest environment of the year. They pumped it in here pretty good today."

The NFC North was sewn up by the Packers two weeks earlier. Even though the bye remained in the balance the top seed didn't do the Packers any good last season. They went 15-1 and lost their opener at home to the eventual champion Giants.

Rodgers played without injured leading receiver Randall Cobb, so Greg Jennings was the main guy, grabbing eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. But the Vikings sacked Rodgers five times, recovering a fumble on one of them at midfield to set up a third-quarter touchdown.

Rodgers has 24 touchdowns, only four interceptions and a 70 percent completion rate over 10 career starts against the Vikings. His poise, arm strength and savvy came through clear against them as much as any other team. Plus, cornerback Antoine Winfield's aggravated hand injury kept him on the sideline for most of the game.

Just as Ponder capably complemented Peterson, DuJuan Harris came out of nowhere to provide Rodgers some help. Green Bay has been proving lately it's not a one-sided offense, either, and Harris rushed 14 times for 70 yards

But this was Peterson's show. Second-and-27? He surged off right tackle and bounced outside for 28 yards on a drive that ended with his second touchdown, a 2-yard reception that pushed the lead to 27-17 in the third quarter. The "MVP" chants from the crowd rang out in earnest after that.

NOTES: Cobb's absence meant the Packers went without a 1,000-yard receiver for the first time since 2003. Cobb finished with 954 yards. ... Vikings WR Jerome Simpson was woozy after an end-zone collision in the third quarter, falling back down after trying to get up the first time. He passed concussion tests and returned to the game.

German magazine mistakenly publishes Bush obituary

(AP) ? Germany's respected news weekly Der Spiegel has mistakenly published an obituary for former U.S. President George H.W. Bush.

The unfinished obituary appeared on Der Spiegel's website for only a few minutes Sunday before it was spotted by Internet users and removed.

In it, the magazine's New York correspondent Marc Pitzke describes Bush as "a colorless politician" whose image only improved when it was compared to the later presidency of his son, George W. Bush.

Bush was hospitalized in Houston Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough. He was moved to intensive care on Dec. 23 after he developed a fever.

A family spokesman says the 88-year-old former president was moved out of intensive care into a regular hospital room again Saturday after his condition improved.

(AP) ? Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby said Saturday that two decades of talks with Israel have been "a waste of time" and that Palestinians will soon take a new statehood bid to the U.N.

The U.N. General Assembly last month endorsed a de facto Palestinian state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza, areas Israel won in a 1967 war. But outright recognition of statehood status for Palestine fell short last year before the more powerful U.N. Security Council.

"We will return to the U.N. Security Council," he said in Ramallah Saturday after meeting Palestinian officials. "Palestine will be cooperating with Arab and EU countries to change the equation (in the peace process) that prevailed over the past 20 years, which was a waste of time."

By mentioning other states and the European Union, some may interpret Elaraby's remarks as implying that the international community should intervene and impose a solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Talks collapsed in 2008 after Palestinians demanded Israel stop building in areas they want for a future state. Israel insists settlements and other core issues should be resolved in talks themselves.

Pakistan to play full series in West Indies in July 2013 ? Cricket News Update

With the Pakistan Cricket Board hoping to host India in the return leg of the bilateral series in August next year, the PCB has convinced its West Indies counterparts to play a full series in July rather than splitting the national team?s scheduled trip to the Caribbean.

The Pakistan cricket team was initially scheduled to tour West Indies in June and July next year. But the itinerary had ran into trouble when the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) requested its Pakistan counterparts to postpone the series by few weeks, as they wanted to host India and Sri Lanka in a short triangular one-day series, also in July.

Last week, it was reported that the PCB and WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) were contemplating over dividing the scheduled itinerary into two legs in a bid to allow the former to create a window for a home series against the archrivals India in August.

However, the sources from inside the Pakistan Cricket Board, on Wednesday confirmed that the Men in Green will now be travelling to the West Indies in July 2013 as planned to play a full-fledged series, comprising two Tests, five One Day Internationals and a one-off T20 International fixture.

"The problem is now sorted out and our team will be touring (West Indies) in July as planned earlier," a source told media reporters yesterday.

"Pakistan is very hopeful and keen that India can be convinced to come to Pakistan because India have made it clear it does not have a policy of playing any bilateral series in a third country," the source added further.

The sub-continental cricketing giants have recently resumed bilateral cricketing ties after a gap of more than five years, with the Pakistan players touring India for a short-limited overs series, and the Pakistan Cricket Board is hoping to invite the India cricketers for a return leg of the bilateral series in late 2013.

"Since bilateral ties have resumed after five years (as India and Pakistan are playing each other currently in India) and presently there is lot of positivity in relations between the two boards, there is a good chance that India might listen to the suggestion of playing in August," another source said.

It may be noted here that Pakistan have not hosted an international cricket game since March 2009, when the on-tour Sri Lankan cricket team?s bus was attacked by militants in Lahore.

Longest-Running Earth Observation Satellite to Retire

After documenting the changing face of our planet since 1984, the longest-running Earth-observing satellite, Landsat 5, will retire soon, the U.S. Geological Survey has announced.

The satellite, which will be retired in the next few months, has long outlived its initial three-year mission. It has circled?Earth more than 150,000 times during its nearly 29 years in space, and has snapped more than 2.5 million images of the planet's surface along the way. Throughout its prolific career, Landsat 5 has captured images of the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Chernobyl disaster, the?expansion of sprawl?around cities like Las Vegas, deforestation in Mexico, and even crowds descending on the U.S. capital to witness President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration.

"Any major event since 1984 that left a mark on this Earth larger than a football field was likely recorded by Landsat 5, whether it was a hurricane, a tsunami, a?wildfire, deforestation, or an oil spill," USGS Director Marcia McNutt said in a statement. "We look forward to a long and productive continuation of the Landsat program, but it is unlikely there will ever be another satellite that matches the outstanding longevity of Landsat 5."?

The first series of maneuvers to safely lower Landsat 5 from its operational orbit is expected to occur next month, according to USGS officials.

This year marked the?40th anniversary of the entire Landsat program, which is a collaboration by NASA and the USGS, an agency of the Interior department. Besides Landsat 5, the only other currently operational craft from the program is Landsat 7, which launched in 1999 and has also outlived its three-year design. [Photos: Landsat's Best 'Earth as Art' Images]

With one mission ending, another is about to begin. NASA is scheduled to blast Landsat 8 ? also called the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) ? into orbit on the back of an Atlas 5 rocket in February 2013.?The new satellite arrived at its launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California last week, NASA officials said.

LDCM has two instruments. One is the Operational Land Imager, which will collect data in visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared wavelengths. It will also conduct observations in two new spectral bands ? one designed to help coastal waters, the other to detect hard-to-see cirrus clouds, according to NASA officials. The other instrument is the Thermal Infrared Sensor, intended to measure the temperature of the Earth's surface.

"Both of these instruments have evolutionary advances that make them the most advanced Landsat instruments to date and are designed to improve performance and reliability to improve observations of the global land surface," Ken Schwer, LDCM project manager at NASA Goddard, said in statement.

David Lowery, Cracker, Camper toil on despite bad odds | Tom ...

Fans may know David Lowery as a solo artist, Cracker frontman or anchor of his self-proclaimed ?unwieldy, chaotic, barely stable collective? Camper Van Beethoven, which has a new album, ?La Costa Perdida,? and celebrates its 30th anniversary next year.

But to his students at the University of Georgia, he is a math genius who helps demystify the increasingly complicated modern music industry.

?I get people to understand how the money works, because it?s a business built on failure,? he says. ?Almost everything that record labels, publishers and songwriters put out are failures, and just every once in a while, one song is kind of a hit.?

Depressing? You have no idea, says Lowery, 52, who brings CVB and Cracker to San Francisco this week.

Young artists shouldn?t waste time thinking they?re skilled, he argues, because talent means nothing in this equation, and luck is everything.

?Most people who tell you they have a formula for success have deluded themselves. They?ve just created a narrative fallacy about why something is successful,? says the singer, who ? with his spectacles and bushy beard ? looks rather professorial.

?It?s a very strange class that I teach ? we talk about risk and reward and the way markets work. It?s a really philosophical thing.?

What does he think accounts for Simon Cowell, and carefully conceived hitmakers like One Direction?

Cowell has more ability than the next producer, the singer admits.

?But we?re just talking about someone like him failing one out of eight times, instead of one out of 10,? says Lowery, who actually worked as a risk-assessing quantitative analyst for an online stockbroker.

?They still fail most of the time, but just a little less than everybody else. That?s the main thing that I teach the kids ? that it?s really unpredictable.?

Lowery has his own parable about the randomness of show biz, regarding a little track on Cracker?s fourth album called ?The World is ?Mine.?

The band enjoyed playing it live, he says, and that was about it. But recently an advertising executive stumbled across the cut, and decided to feature it in a new Gillette commercial: ?Suddenly that song is making more money for us than 90 percent of our catalog,? he says.

The Richmond, Va.-based Lowery wrote and recorded ?La Costa Perdida,? the whimsical new California-themed comeback (with songs such as ?Too High for the Love-In?) in his old Bay Area stomping grounds for a real West Coast feel.

Even though his outlook regarding success is bleak, the musician continues to make albums, he says, ?because you have to ? you have to keep playing the lottery. Then the higher the chances are that somehow, some song gets picked up in some weird way, and you make some money.?

Sugar Nation: How Diabetes Affects So Much | What's Next?

Are we a nation hooked on sugar? It?s not a new idea. In fact, it?s the subject of an upcoming documentary, Sweet Nothing: America?s Addiction to Sugar. It?s also the topic of a recent book that is aptly titled, Sugar Nation by Jeff O?Connell.

In this book O?Connell?s personal story reflects a national and very public health crisis: diabetes.

It begins because O?Connell, a health writer for numerous fitness magazines, learns that his estranged father is dying of complications from diabetes. Thinking he himself is immune ? because he is ?skinny? and ?healthy? ? O?Connell discovers that he is dangerously pre-diabetic. The book follows his attempt to reconcile with his father and fight the nearly inevitable onset of this terrible disease at the same time.

Reading the book will ?scare the starch? out of you!

O?Connell races through the book to learn as much as he can about the disease that is killing his father and threatening to take him down the same path.

The main takeaway is that sugar exists in our food supply much more than the simple white stuff you put in your coffee. It is our systemic reliance on simple carbohydrates that throw the body out of whack for so long that it creates the perfect setting for diabetes to emerge in the body and begin its damage.

If you think of diabetes as a manageable disease thanks to medicine and diet, you might be surprised to learn how many body systems are negatively affected by glucose and how present diet recommendations could be making the situation even worse. Anyone who has diabetes or is dangerously close to diabetes needs to read this book. It turns out that blood sugar problems contribute to a wide range of major health issues, particularly heart disease and stroke. Irregular blood sugar also negatively affects circulation and can cause everything from limb amputation to blindness.

The addictive quality of sugar has been studied for several years. However, you can ask anyone with a serious sweet tooth how difficult it can be to stop eating once you start! While the word ?addiction? is frowned upon by those in ?real? addiction recovery programs ? AA, Narcotics Anonymous ? there seems to be growing evidence that, although in differing proportions, sugar and even wheat may contribute to hazardous compulsive eating habits.

The first popular book on the topic was Sugar Blues, published in 1975. It is still relevant today in our even greater ?over sweetened? world. The new documentary looks at recent

What can you do to limit the amount of sugar in your diet and gain the health advantages? A recent pin on the Sweet Nothing?s Pinterest page breaks it down as thus:

?Eat less CRAP:
C ? carbonated drinks
R ? refined sugar
A ? artificial sweeteners and colors
P ? processed foods

Eat more FOOD:
F ? fruit and veggies
O ? organic lean proteins
O ? omega 3 fatty acids
D ? drink water?

O?Connell would probably add that daily, rigorous exercise is also very important to regulate internal blood sugar and reduce dietary cravings for the sweet stuff, too.

Is it too late if you?ve already been diagnosed with diabetes? A resounding NO! You should always consult a doctor before going off of medication or taking over-the-counter supplements. However, changing your diet to drastically reduce carbs and simple sugars is one approach suitable for most. Another is increasing your amount of daily exercise. Both are two strategies to live longer and feel better!

Audits of businesses for illegal immigrants rising

SEATTLE (AP) ? U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reached its highest number yet of companies audited for illegal immigrants on their payrolls this past fiscal year.

Audits of employer I-9 forms increased from 250 in fiscal year 2007 to more than 3,000 in 2012. From fiscal years 2009 to 2012, the total amount of fines grew to nearly $13 million from $1 million. The number of company managers arrested has increased to 238, according to data provided by ICE.

The investigations of companies have been one of the pillars of President Barack Obama's immigration policy.

When Obama recently spoke about addressing immigration reform in his second term, he said any measure should contain penalties for companies that purposely hire illegal immigrants. It's not a new stand, but one he will likely highlight as his administration launches efforts to revamp the nation's immigration system.

"Our goal is compliance and deterrence," said Brad Bench, special agent in charge at ICE's Seattle office. "The majority of the companies we do audits on end up with no fines at all, but again it's part of the deterrence method. If companies know we're out there, looking across the board, they're more likely to bring themselves into compliance."

While the administration has used those numbers to bolster their record on immigration enforcement, advocates say the audits have pushed workers further underground by causing mass layoffs and disrupted business practices.

When the ICE audit letter arrived at Belco Forest Products, management wasn't entirely surprised. Two nearby businesses in Shelton, a small timber town on a bay off Washington state's Puget Sound, had already been investigated.

But the 2010 inquiry became a months-long process that cost the timber company experienced workers and money. It was fined $17,700 for technicalities on their record keeping.

"What I don't like is the roll of the dice," said Belco's chief financial officer Tom Behrens. "Why do some companies get audited and some don't? Either everyone gets audited or nobody does. Level the playing field."

Belco was one of 339 companies fined in fiscal year 2011 and one of thousands audited that year.

Employers are required to have their workers fill out an I-9 form that declares them authorized to work in the country. Currently, an employer needs only to verify that identifying documents look real.

The audits, part of a $138 million worksite enforcement effort, rely on ICE officers scouring over payroll records to find names that don't match Social Security numbers and other identification databases.

The audits "don't make any sense before a legalization program," said Daniel Costa, an immigration policy analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington, D.C., think tank. "You're leaving the whole thing up to an employer's eyesight and subjective judgment, that's the failure of the law. There's no verification at all. Then you have is the government making a subjective judgment about subjective judgment."

An AP review of audits that resulted in fines in fiscal year 2011 shows that the federal government is fining industries across the country reliant on manual labor and that historically have hired immigrants. The data provides a glimpse into the results of a process affecting thousands of companies and thousands of workers nationwide.

Over the years, ICE has switched back-and-forth between making names of the companies fined public or not. Lately, ICE has emphasized its criminal investigations of managers, such as a Dunkin' Donuts manager in Maine sentenced to home arrest for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants or a manager of an Illinois hiring firm who got 18 months in prison.

Many employers also wonder how ICE picks the companies it probes.

"Geography is not a factor. The size of the company is not a factor. And the industry it's in is not a factor. We can audit any company anywhere of any size," Bench said. He added ICE auditors follow leads from the public, other employers, employees and do perform some random audits.

But ICE auditors hit ethnic stores, restaurants, bakeries, manufacturing companies, construction, food packaging, janitorial services, catering, dairies and farms. The aviation branch of corporate giant GE, franchises of sandwich shop Subway and a subsidiary of food product company Heinz were among some of the companies with national name recognition. GE was fined $2,000.

In fiscal year 2011, the most recent year reviewed by AP, the median fine was $11,000. The state with the most workplaces fined was Texas with 63, followed by New Jersey with 37.

The lowest fine was $90 to a Massachusetts fishing company. The highest fine was $394,944 to an employment agency in Minneapolis, according to the data released to AP through a public records request.

A Subway spokesman said the company advises franchise owners to follow the law. A Heinz spokesman declined comment.

Bench didn't have specifics on what percentage of fines come from companies having illegal immigrants on their payroll, as opposed to technical paperwork fines in recent years.

Julie Wood, a former deputy director at ICE who now runs a consulting firm, said she'd like to see the burden of proving the legality of a company's workforce go from the employer to the government. She'd like to see a type of program, such as E-Verify, be implemented with the I-9 employment form. E-Verify is a voluntary and free program for private employers that checks a workers eligibility.

"At the end of the day, the fine is the least of it," she said. "Usually the company will spend more on legal fees. But it is a huge headache for the company to lose workers."

Wood said she'd like to see the agency go after more criminal charges and focus on companies that treat worker inhumanely.

The next financial crisis is upon us! Student loan debt... - UFC ...

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/06/opinio...ebt/index.html

This topic is important to me because its when applying for college that I was educating myself on personal finance. I chose not to take a loan, not to go out of state for college, and to work nights at restaurants and live as frugal as possible to avoid this pending crisis personally. Ive paid cash for every semester so far and will continue to do so until graduation.

Now of course Im not going to personally avoid this crisis. Because of the government backed loans this will again fall to all us. Yay government

For the younger guys on this forum I just want to say a few things. Everything you have heard about college in high school is a lie. You dont make more by going to college. You make more by specializing in high job growth sectors. Majors like music, art, political science, geology, etc are garbage. If you want to make money, research majors with high job growth statistics and go there. In school I remember them always pitching college == $$. Thats just not true. Experience == $$. Its all been a sham. And its another house of cards propped up by a blinded government.

To the rest of you, get rdy its gonna be gross. 1/5 households have student loan debt. Thats GG.
