Featured App: ?The Devil Inside? for iPhone, iPod, And iPad

There are far more ways to experience a film beyond the theaters. Apps for your smart phone or tablet are the newest form, and that?s where I come in. My job is to weed out the bad and send through the good.

Today?s featured app is ?The Devil Inside? for the iPhone, iPod and iPad. So sit back and let?s get the party started. Hit the jump to see how this app performed and whether it?s worth the download.

I?ve actually never heard of this film, to be completely honest with you. I had to YouTube the trailer to get brought up to speed. For a film that?s being released on the 6th of January, there has been very little promotion. That must be why they release this app for the iPhone and it?s multiple sister products.

The film is a ?Paranormal Activity?-esque possesion film, centered around a camera crew and their documentation of a woman who murdered her family after spirits inhabited her. The app itself doesn?t go too far of course from that idea, and is rather simple, displaying itself as quick test scanner to identify any demons that may live within you.

The app is free, and starts off, upon launch of the app, with a picture of the poster, a short, one sentence instruction, and then the option to start the actual test.

The app then proceeds to ask you a series of questions. I answered no to all of them because they involved possession, which has never been a problem with me.

Once you?ve answered all the questions, it has you line up two red crosses with your pupils.

I won?t spoil what it does from here, but I will say one thing: I was not impressed.

It?s a dated concept in a time where it takes a hell of a lot more to impress a viewer. The app was free, so I wasn?t too upset, but I would like to write the studio and get a refund on my time wasted. It?s very predictable, but hey, like I said, it was free, so if it seems like you might dig the movie, then get the app.

Just don?t expect much in return.

Maneuver likely killed Canadian skydiver in California

slideshow PERRIS, Calif. (AP) ? An experienced Canadian skydiver died at a Southern California drop zone after landing hard while attempting a high-speed maneuver known as "swooping," authorities said Wednesday.

Michael Ungar, 32, died Tuesday afternoon at Perris Valley Skydiving, about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. It was the sixth death at the parachuting facility in the last 15 months.

Witnesses said Unger's parachute was open as he made the difficult maneuver and landed in a shallow pond. Friends pulled him out of the water, the Riverside County coroner and Perris police said in a news release.

Swooping involves a high-speed dive to skim over the ground before landing. Parachutists are often traveling 40 mph vertically and up to 60 mph horizontally just before touching down on the ground.

"It's risky because you are moving so fast," said Jim Crouch, the safety director for the Fredericksburg, Va.-based United State Parachuting Association. "A lot of jumpers choose to land this way because it's exciting. But it's very unforgiving."

Accidents occur when parachutists start the maneuver too low and the parachute doesn't have the ability to recover, or fill with air, and float the skydiver to the ground, Crouch said.

The maneuver has become so popular there are swooping competitions at drop zones around the country, said Crouch, who describes it as "a sport within a sport."

There have now been four sport parachuting swooping deaths nationwide this year, Crouch said. The highest death count involving the maneuver was seven in 2002. There were six in 2006 and four last year.

"Jumpers are getting safer with this type of skydiving, (but) you can never completely take the risk out of it," Crouch said.

The 33,000-member United States Parachute Association promotes safe skydiving through training, licensing and instructor-qualification programs.

There are more than 140,000 jumps each year at Perris Valley Skydiving, one of the most active of 140 drop zones in the United States. Tuesday's accident marks at least the 14th death at the Perris facility since 2000 and the fifth this year.

"It's been a bad year for them," Crouch said. "I know they have been working on getting everybody to jump as safe as possible.

"It's a high-volume drop zone. The percentage doesn't point to them doing anything out of the ordinary."

Perris Valley Skydiving center manager Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld said Ungar, of Ontario, sometimes worked as an instructor at Skydive Hollister on California's Central Coast. Ungar, who had 2,000 jumps to his credit, was visiting the Perris area and had rarely, if ever, jumped at the facility, Brodsky-Chenfeld said.

Ungar's parachute was open and he was circling as he neared the ground, witness Jack Nix, of Fontana, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. But when he did not pull up or turn his body upright from parallel to the ground, Nix said he knew the skydiver was in trouble.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the air safety regulator only investigates such deaths to determine whether the parachute was packed properly by a certified packer.

Local authorities were investigating the Ungar's death. Other recent fatal accidents at Perris:

? In April, two skydivers collided, killing Jacob Jensen, 32, of Denmark. The other man survived critical injuries.

? Two skydivers were killed in March when their parachutes deflated and they fell 300 feet.

? In February, a 41-year-old Australian woman died after failing to open a backup chute.

? In September 2010, a 51-year-old Russian man died after a solo jump. The man's body was not found until two months later by a farmer plowing a field. His parachutes had not been deployed.

From coach to sex offender

Coach Matthew Ryndak showed an intense interest in teen basketball players that alarmed parents.

2003-07: Ryndak works as a middle school gym teacher and basketball coach at Leigh Elementary in Norridge. While there, parents note his controlling personality, according to one father, Stephen Frey.

Nov. 1, 2006-Feb. 28, 2007: Ryndak works as an assistant basketball coach at Ridgewood High School in Norridge. Frey's son complains about obsessive texting and calls from Ryndak.

May 2007: Ryndak is hired as head basketball coach at Johnsburg High School. Over the summer, he repeatedly asks a Johnsburg community booster to contact Frey and ask him to move his son to Johnsburg.

Late 2007: Johnsburg High basketball player Bob Hutchinson receives odd texts and calls from Ryndak, including one in which Ryndak asks the then-16-year-old about his pubic hair, according to Hutchinson and a Johnsburg police report.

July 2008: Hutchinson's mother, Mary Lou, contacts school officials after learning of the phone conversation. Another parent, Scott Dixon, also complains to school officials.

August 2008: The Hutchinsons and Dixons complain to Johnsburg police, who find no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Oct. 13, 2008:Mary Lou Hutchinson writes to Johnsburg High School Principal Kevin Shelton, questioning why no disciplinary action has been taken.

Oct. 23, 2008: Ryndak resigns.

Oct. 29, 2008: A third parent complains to Johnsburg police, saying Ryndak has purchased an iPod Touch for his son. The father inquires about getting a restraining order against Ryndak after learning Ryndak has made derogatory statements in an email to his son, a police report states.

2009: Ryndak begins a new job as an assistant basketball coach for Crete-Monee High School, which later hires him as a full-time physical education teacher and coach during the 2010-11 season. He helps turn the team around with a 25-4 record.

May 2011: Ryndak is put on administrative leave after school officials learn that the Department of Children and Family Services is investigating an allegation of sexual abuse. He is charged with eight counts of aggravated sexual abuse against a teenage boy.

Nov. 2, 2011: Ryndak pleads guilty to four counts of aggravated sexual child abuse. He is sentenced to four years' probation and mental health counseling. He is labeled a sex offender, and his teaching certificate is revoked.

Israeli security forces launched a pair of airstrikes against suspected Palestinian militants Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring eight others, Israeli military and Palestinian medical sources said. The attacks were against terror cells in Gaza affiliated with the Global Jihad terror movement, Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. One of the cells intended to travel to the Israeli-Egyptian border in the Sinai to carry out an attack similar to one staged in August, according to the Israeli military."The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel," the Israeli military said. "The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza strip."During the August incident, seven Israelis were killed in an attack after militants infiltrated across the border with Egypt. When Israel responded, it mistakenly shelled a number of Egyptian security forces, killing five of them.Israel issued a rare apology for the casualties.

LONDON ? Britain's Prince Philip has spent a third night in the hospital as he recovers after treatment for a blocked coronary artery.

Buckingham Palace officials say the 90-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II is in good spirits and will remain under observation for "a short period."

The prince underwent a successful coronary stent procedure after he went to the hospital on Friday complaining of chest pains.

On Monday he is likely to miss the Royal Family's Boxing Day shooting party, which he usually leads.

Philip is known to be active and robust, appearing at many engagements ? most recently taking a 10-day tour of Australia with the queen.

Six of Philip's grandchildren, including Princes William and Harry, visited him Sunday in the hospital.

Indian Courts Challenge Facebook, Google Content: Report

(Reuters) - U.S. companies Facebook, Google and Yahoo, and other internet firms, have been ordered by two Indian courts to remove material considered religiously offensive, the latest skirmish in a growing battle over website content in the world's largest democracy.

One court in the capital Delhi on Friday issued summons to 19 companies to stand trial for offences relating to distributing obscene material to minors, after being shown images it said were offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians, the PTI news agency said.

"The accused in connivance with each other and other unknown persons are selling, publicly exhibiting and have put into circulation obscene, lascivious content, Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar said on Friday in the PTI report.

India has generally unrestricted access to the Internet for those of its 1.2 billion people who can afford it and are on the electrical and telephone grids.

Like us on Facebook

So far only about a tenth of the population uses the Web, but with the number of connections growing fast in the religiously conservative society, concerns about the nature of web content are growing in some quarters, including senior government officials.

Another Delhi court earlier this week told the websites to remove photographs, videos or text which might hurt religious sentiments.

"We believe that access to information is the foundation of a free society," a Google spokesman said in an emailed statement. "Where content is illegal or breaks our terms of service we will continue to remove it."

The spokesman told Reuters the company had not yet been officially notified of the courts' action.

The courts and the other companies were not immediately available for comment.

Earlier this month, Telecoms Minister Kapil Sibal urged Facebook, Twitter, Google and others to remove offensive material, unleashing a storm of criticism from internet users complaining of censorship.

The Delhi court cases were brought by individuals, one by a journalist and the other by an Islamic scholar who runs a website called fatwaonline.org that gives answers to moral questions.

Despite rules to remove offensive content, India's internet access is largely free when compared with tight controls in fellow Asian economic powerhouse China. But in line with many other governments around the world, India has become increasingly nervous about the power of social media.

India has 100 million internet users, the third-largest user base behind China and the United States which is forecast to grow to 300 million users in the next three years.

Mulally: Continuous Improvement is 'at the Centerpiece of the Entire Ford Transformation'

With a focus on communication, collaboration and accountability, Alan Mulally has led Ford from the brink of bankruptcy to profitability -- without government bailout funds -- and has positioned the automaker for global growth.

In the process, Mulally has become the face of the U.S. auto industry's renaissance, and has earned a spot in the 2011 IndustryWeek Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

In a conversation with IndustryWeek earlier this month, Mulally reflected on his career at Ford and Boeing, and talked about the challenges and opportunities on the horizon for America's No. 2 automaker.

IW: Which of your achievements at Ford make you the proudest?

AM: Well I think I'd start with the products.

We now have arguably one of the finest complete product lines of any vehicle manufacturer worldwide -- and we're serving the customer with a complete lineup of very safe and efficient and wonderful cars and trucks and utilities. Another thing that we all feel very good about is the fact that we are now serving all of our customers around the world -- in the Americas, in Europe, Russia, Asia Pacific, India, China -- we're bringing all of these wonderful Ford products to so many customers around the world. Another one is that we're really creating a strong business. We've been growing. We've paid back the money that we borrowed. We're investing for the future -- we're going to add 12,000 jobs in the United States over the next couple of years, and they're great jobs, great careers. We are fighting for the soul of American manufacturing. We're competing with the best in the world, and we're actually exporting our vehicles now around the world based on our U.S. competitiveness. And the third one would be that we are all so proud to be contributing to a better world. What we are doing on petro and diesel engines and powertrains, on lightweight materials, on electrification, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, all-electric, hydrogen, natural gas -- we really are contributing to a better world. IW: What are the core values and leadership principles that have driven your success at Ford? AM: I'd start with the fundamental principle of people working together.

Mel Gibson, wife finalize divorce (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A judge on Friday approved a divorce settlement between actor Mel Gibson and his estranged wife Robyn, ending their 31 years of marriage.

Robyn Gibson will return to using her maiden name, Robyn Denise Moore, but other details of the divorce were kept confidential. The settlement becomes effective on January 9.

Gibson, 55, and his wife married in Australia in 1980 and have seven children together.

The couple separated in 2006 after Gibson was arrested for drunk driving in Malibu, California, and made anti-Semitic remarks that generated headlines around the world.

The actor's wife sued for divorce in April 2009, citing irreconcilable differences following Gibson's relationship with Oksana Grigorieva, with whom he has a 2-year-old daughter.

The "Lethal Weapon" star pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery following an altercation with Grigorieva in 2010, and was sentenced to three years' probation.

He recently settled a custody battle with his former girlfriend, agreeing to pay Grigorieva $750,000 and share custody of their daughter.

The Oscar winner's turbulent five years since his arrest and the anti-Semitic rant have tarnished his reputation and set back a remarkable career that had made him one of Hollywood's highest paid actors, directors and producers.

While no details of the divorce settlement were released, the actor was previously estimated to be worth $900 million, and he owns several properties in the wealthy, seaside enclave of Malibu, outside Los Angeles.

Dutch Parliament: Downloading Movies and Music Will Stay Legal

In an attempt to reduce widespread piracy in the Netherlands, the government there recently introduced a plan that would make downloading movies and music unlawful. However, this proposal was binned yesterday by a motion from the Dutch parliament due to concerns it would restrict the free flow of information, invade the privacy of citizens and invite copyright trolls. Instead, they encourage the entertainment industry to focus their attention on providing authorized alternatives.

amsterdamAs in many other countries around the world, downloading music and movies is hugely popular in the Netherlands. A massive 30% of the population is said to do so.

Presently, the Dutch see downloading movies and music for personal use as ?fair use? and not punishable by law. However, the current government is trying to find a solution to the ever-increasing piracy problem and has proposed a new bill to make it unlawful.

The topic has resulted in a heated political debate over the past several months, and yesterday opponents of the bill won the first battle as the Dutch parliament adopted a motion to keep downloading movies and music for personal use legal.

One of the main concerns of the parliament is that a download ban would go against the free and open Internet, as it restrict the free flow of information. The motion further states that enforcing such a ban via monitoring would invade the privacy of Internet users.

In addition, the parliament is worried that should downloading become unlawful, copyright holders will go after individual downloaders in court. This might result in a similar situation currently seen in countries like the United States and Germany, where hundreds of thousands of Internet subscribers are being sued by copyright trolls out to make a quick buck.

Instead of a download ban, the parliament suggests that the entertainment industry should focus more on offering authorized alternatives. At the moment, it is practically impossible to download high quality copies of recent movies and TV-shows via legal channels in the Netherlands.

The stance of the Dutch parliament is in line with an authoritative report commissioned by the government in 2009. In the report it was estimated that file-sharing has an overall positive effect on the Dutch economy. While it was recognized that the entertainment industry suffers some losses, these don?t outweigh the positive effects of file-sharing.

This report also motivated the Swiss government to keep downloading of music and movies totally legal a few weeks ago.

While the adopted motion is a win for the parties who want to keep downloading for personal use legal, State Secretary for Security and Justice Fred Teeven has already announced that he plans to bring the plan back in an altered form. Whether that will be able to address the current concerns of parliament is yet to be seen.

Chefs Feed Offers Chef?s Suggestions at Local Restaurants to Help Decide What to Eat [IPhone Downloads]

Chefs Feed Offers Chef’s Suggestions at Local Restaurants to Help Decide What to Eat iOS: Social apps that promise to help you find restaurants and dishes based on what other people have enjoyed are great, but they often cast the net so wide that it's difficult to tell who's complaining because they have no taste versus the people who have legitimate issues. Chefs Feed is a new iOS app that shows you what your city's best and most prominent chefs are eating and where, so you can go give them a try.

Chefs Feed currently supports eight cities in the US, including New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and more, and is expanding to at least seven more in its next major update. Once installed, select your city to see the chefs in your area, read a bit about them, and then see what eateries in your town they suggest, and what they say you should have when you get there. Not all of the suggestions are high dining either?many of the chef-suggested restaurants and dishes are decidedly everyman meals that can be enjoyed on a budget.

You can check out a live feed of new restaurant and dish suggestions as they're added to the app, see all of the suggested restaurants on a top-down map, and browse photos of the food you're reading about as well. Chefs Feed is free and available now in the iTunes App Store, and is coming soon to Android and BlackBerry devices.

Update: Sorry about the duplicate post, guys. If you didn't grab it before, check out the newest version which has added push notifications.

House and Senate Republicans Are Now Openly Trashing Each Other (The Atlantic Wire)

The payroll tax debate in Congress is tearing asunder Reagan's Eleventh Commandment:?Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.

In an unusual intra-party dispute, House Republicans rejected a bill supported by a majority of Senate Republicans to extend the payroll tax holiday for two months on Tuesday. Now that the votes are on the scoreboard, Republicans in both chambers are openly trashing each other's decision.?

Related: Obama Raises the Stakes on the Payroll Tax Impasse

"House Republicans? plan to scuttle the deal to help middle-class families is irresponsible and wrong," tweeted Republican Senator Scott Brown of Massachussets.?"The refusal to compromise now threatens to increase taxes on hard-working Americans and stop unemployment benefits for those out of work," he elaborated in a remark to?The Hill.??Brown may have an excuse to trash-talk fellow Republicans, he faces a tough re-election bid against liberal hero Elizabeth Warren, but he wasn't the only one firing off barbs.?

Related: Government Shutdown Looms as Payroll Tax Talks Stall

Speaking out against Speaker Boehner, Republican Senator Dean Heller said the House's tactics were "about political leverage, not about what?s good for the American people. Congress can work out a solution without stopping the payroll tax-cut extension for the middle class,? reports? The Washington Post. On the House side, there were plenty of?searing?remarks.?

?I?ll be honest, I don?t know what the Senate was thinking,? said Republican Congressman Allen West of Florida on Tuesday. He called the deal brokered by fellow Republican and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell "crap." Laying on the criticism of McConnell, Republican Congressman Tom Latham of Iowa said "Mr. McConnell knew the position of our leadership was [we] wanted to do a year-long. I don?t know what happened.??

At the center of the disagreement is Boehner and McConnell but neither GOP leader is explaining how they wound up on opposite sides of the payroll tax debate. Most suspect Boehner failed to bring House Republicans onboard with the payroll tax deal after promising McConnell they would support it?but Boehner has said he supported a 1-year extension all along.?Roll Call?reports that House Republicans are actively trying to figure out what went wrong between Boehner and McConnell.?

"People didn?t quite understand how, when the Speaker left the meeting with Sen. McConnell and Sen. Reid, this abomination was what was sent back to us,? Republican Congressman Steven LaTourette tells the newspaper. He says Boehner seemed??befuddled. ... The question was asked directly of him. That question was asked, ?What?s the disconnect between you and Sen. McConnell?? And he said he doesn?t know.? CHP officer injured in crash on I-880 northbound in Union City

FREMONT -- A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was injured Thursday morning after he was ejected at least 100 feet when he was rear-ended by a minivan on Interstate 880 at the Decoto Road onramp, officials said.

The officer was able to get out of oncoming traffic on his own and was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment.

The incident happened about 7 a.m.

The CHP said the motor officer and an officer in a car were escorting a semi-truck carrying a wide load onto the northbound lanes of the freeway at Decoto.

The motorcycle officer was in the first lane of traffic for only a few seconds when he was hit from behind by a minivan that was traveling in excess of 60 mph, the CHP said. The officer was thrown at least 100 feet onto the roadway but was able to get up and get off the freeway on his own.

The van driver stopped and was questioned and released by the CHP pending further investigation.

The on-ramp and traffic lane where the officer was hit were shut down for about an hour.

As the country mourned for a second day with high-level visits to Kim's body at a memorial palace and public gatherings of weeping citizens, state media fed a budding personality cult around his youngest known son and anointed heir, Kim Jong Un, hailing him as a "lighthouse of hope."

Kim's body was wrapped in red cloth and surrounded by blossoms of his namesake flowers, red "kimjongilia." As solemn music played, Kim Jong Un ? believed to be in his late 20s ? entered the hall to view his father's bier, surrounded by military honor guards. He observed a moment of solemn silence, then circled the bier, followed by other officials.

Outside one of the capital's main performance centers, mourners carried wreaths and flowers toward a portrait of Kim Jong Il. Groups were allowed to grieve in front of the portrait for a few minutes at a time.

"We will change today's sorrow into strength and courage and work harder for a powerful and prosperous nation, as our general wanted, under the leadership of the new General Kim Jong Un," U Son Hui, a Pyongyang resident, told The Associated Press.

The announcement Monday of Kim's death over the weekend raised acute concerns in the region over the possibility of a power struggle between the untested son and rivals, in a country pursuing nuclear weapons and known for its unpredictability and secrecy.

But there have been no signs of unrest or discord in Pyongyang's somber streets.

With the country in an 11-day period of official mourning, flags were flown at half-staff at all military units, factories, businesses, farms and public buildings. The streets of Pyongyang were quiet, but throngs of people gathered at landmarks honoring Kim.

Kim's bier was decorated by a wreath from Kim Jong Un along with various medals and orders. The body was laid out in the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, a mausoleum where the embalmed body of Kim's father ? national founder Kim Il Sung ? has been on display in a glass sarcophagus since his death in 1994.

Kim Jong Il died of a massive heart attack on Saturday caused by overwork and stress, according to the North's media. He was 69 ? though some experts question the official accounts of his birth date and location.

The state funeral for Kim is set for Dec. 28 in Pyongyang, to be followed by a national memorial service the next day, according to the North's state media. North Korean officials say they will not invite foreign delegations and will allow no entertainment during the mourning period.

Since Kim's death the media have stepped up their lavish praise of the son, indicating an effort to strengthen a cult of personality around him similar to that of his father and ? much more strongly ? of Kim Il Sung.

The Korean Central News Agency on Tuesday described Kim Jong Un as "a great person born of heaven," a propaganda term previously used only for his father and grandfather. The Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party, added in an editorial that Kim Jong Un is "the spiritual pillar and the lighthouse of hope" for the military and the people.

It described the twenty-something Kim as "born of Mount Paektu," one of Korea's most cherished sites and Kim Jong Il's official birthplace. On Monday, the North said in a dispatch that the people and the military "have pledged to uphold the leadership of comrade Kim Jong Un" and called him a "great successor" of the country's revolutionary philosophy of juche, or self reliance.

Young Koreans, the North reported, "are burning with the faith and will to remain loyal to Kim Jong Un."

But concerns remain over whether the transition will be a smooth one.

South Korea put its military on high alert, and experts warned that the next few days could be a crucial turning point for the North, which though impoverished by economic mismanagement and repeated famine, has a relatively well-supported, 1.2 million-strong armed forces.

South Korea offered condolences to the North Korean people, but the government said no official delegation will be traveling from Seoul to Pyongyang to pay their respects.

Kim's death could set back efforts by the United States and others to get Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions. Concerns are also high that Kim Jong Un ? being young and largely untested ? may feel he needs to prove himself by precipitating a crisis or displaying his swagger on the international stage.

Kim Jong Il was in power for 17 years after the death of his father, and was groomed for power years before that. Kim Jong Un only emerged as the likely heir over the past year.

North Korea conducted at least one short-range missile test Monday, South Korean officials said. But they saw it as a routine drill.

"The sudden death of Kim Jong Il has plunged the isolated state of North Korea into a period of major uncertainty. There are real concerns that heir-apparent Kim Jong Un has not had sufficient time to form the necessary alliances in the country to consolidate his future as leader of the country," said Sarah McDowall, a senior analyst with U.S.-based consultants IHS.

Some analysts, however, said Kim's death was unlikely to plunge the country into chaos because it already was preparing for a transition. Kim Jong Il indicated a year ago that Kim Jong Un would be his successor, putting him in high-ranking posts.

Boehner wants new bill cutting payroll tax (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday that he opposes a Senate-approved bill that extends a payroll tax cut and jobless benefits for just two months and said congressional bargainers need to write a new version that would last an entire year.

As if to suggest other changes he would like in the legislation, the Ohio Republican mentioned a provision that would block Obama administration anti-pollution rules and "reasonable reductions in spending" that were in a House-passed version of the payroll tax bill that the Senate ignored.

Boehner's comments came a day after House Republicans used a conference call to complain bitterly about the Senate bill, putting House passage in serious jeopardy.

House Republicans dislike the Senate bill for many reasons, including its lack of what they consider real spending cuts and its removal of restrictions on Obama administration rules. Others are unhappy about extending unemployment benefits or oppose cutting the payroll tax, which is used to finance the Social Security system.

"It's pretty clear I and our members oppose the Senate bill," Boehner said on "Meet the Press" on NBC. He added, "I believe two months is just kicking the can down the road."

House leaders have scheduled a vote on the bill for Monday.

The bill would force President Barack Obama to make a decision in the next two months on whether to build the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. The president had initially said he would postpone a decision on the 1,700-mile-long pipeline until after next year's elections and threatened to kill the payroll tax bill if it included the pipeline provision. But he backed off this week as the Senate payroll compromise took shape.

Republicans strongly support the pipeline, which is supposed to pump oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas, for the thousands of jobs it is expected to create. Unions favor the plan but environmentalists oppose it, forcing Obama to choose between two Democratic constituencies.

The Senate bill says Obama can reject the pipeline only if he decides building it would not be in the national interest.

Congressional leaders had hoped that approval of the tax measure would end their work and let them send lawmakers home for the year. It is unclear how long it would take House and Senate leaders to work out any new compromise on the legislation, but Boehner suggested it could done in the next two weeks.

The bill would extend this year's 4.2 payroll tax rate through February. Without congressional action, that rate would return to 6.2 percent on Jan. 1, costing 160 million workers a two-month tax break worth nearly $170.

The bill would continue extra unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed, which would also expire Jan. 1. It would also prevent a 27 percent in doctors' Medicare reimbursements from occurring on New Year's Day, a cut that could discourage some physicians from treating Medicare-covered patients.

Romney warms up tepid South Carolina campaign (Reuters)

GREENVILLE, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney warmed up his tepid campaign in South Carolina on Friday with the endorsement of Republican Governor Nikki Haley, winning a key ally for a tough fight.

"We've been hoping for this for a long, long time," Romney said at a campaign event in Greenville with the Tea Party champion Haley standing at his side as he started a two-day tour of the early-voting state.

Romney has been lagging in South Carolina and his backers in the state have been urging him to campaign here more frequently to compete with rival Newt Gingrich, who has been leading in polls of the state's Republicans.

The state is critical on the political calendar. South Carolina holds the first primary in the South on January 21, the third contest, following Iowa on January 3 and New Hampshire on January 10.

While Romney is favored to win New Hampshire, it would be a nightmare scenario for him to lose both Iowa and South Carolina with the winner likely to have important momentum going into the January 31 primary in Florida, which could crown the ultimate nominee.

Romney has had difficulty in appealing to conservatives, particularly those who make up the lion's share of the Republican community in South Carolina. Haley could prove to be a valuable ally.

Haley, an Indian-American, was elected in 2010 as South Carolina's first female governor with the strong backing of Tea Party champion Sarah Palin. Though her popularity has sagged a bit in recent months, her endorsement was still coveted by Republican presidential candidates.

Haley told reporters she believes a spirited campaign of appearances and TV ads would turn around Romney's fortunes in the state. She said South Carolina voters are not concerned about Romney's Mormon religion.

"When it comes to Mormon faith, I will tell you that whatever the person's faith, that's not going to be an issue for my constituents, and the reason I know why is because South Carolina just elected a 38-year old Indian female governor," she said.

She told the crowd she settled on Romney after listening to all the contenders and determining he had the best qualities to be president, including her No. 1 priority: "I didn't want anyone tied to Washington."

Romney, who had campaigned for Haley when she won a come-from-behind victory as governor in 2010, said he hoped to emulate Haley's come-from-behind performance in South Carolina.

"I see every state as a battlefield," Romney said. "There's no place I can look at and say, 'this is going to be easy, I don't need to worry about that.'"

After days of hurling sharp attacks at chief rival Gingrich, Romney renewed his focus again on Democratic President Barack Obama and his leadership of the U.S. economy.

"This is a failed presidency," he said.

Democrats were eager to return fire, seizing on a comment Romney made earlier in the day in Sioux City, Iowa, to workers at a steel plant.

Romney, talking about popular entitlement programs, said until he got into government, "I have to admit I didn't know all the differences" between Medicare, a health insurance program for the elderly, and Medicaid, which helps the poor.

The Democratic National Committee, which is on a daily mission to disrupt Romney's campaign, quickly accused the wealthy former venture capitalist of being out of town with everyday Americans.

"There is not one thing in Mitt Romney's entire history that shows one bit of concern for middle-class Americans," said DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

Romney told reporters on his plane that he had made a "self-deprecating understatement" and that in his younger days he had done some consulting work for various health care companies.

Nigeria protest over toll roads turns violent (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? Witnesses say police in Nigeria have shot rifles and fired tear gas at protesters who were demonstrating against toll roads.

At least one person was shot at Saturday's protest, and police also beat and arrested an Associated Press photographer who was covering the event.

One police officer held the photographer down while others hit him with batons. His camera equipment was taken before he was thrown into the back of a police truck. More than a dozen other people also were arrested.

The photographer was released several hours later without charge, and was treated for blunt-force trauma injuries to his neck, shoulder and knee.

The protest focused on anger over the state government allowing a private company that built a major road in Lagos to collect tolls there.

Internet Explorer to start automatic upgrading across Windows 7, Vista and XP

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery right? Well, in an attempt to keep its tenuous grip on the browsing crown, it's borrowing some tricks from its plucky upstart competitors. Microsoft's announced that Internet Explorer will now tie into future Windows Update releases. The new system will start in the new year in both Australia and Brazil -- no, we don't get the connection either -- with a graduated roll-out from there throughout 2012. Microsoft's saying this will help keep their browser secure and on the cutting edge of all those HTML5 developments. Fortunately, according to the Windows Team Blog, auto-update antagonists will still be able to opt out of the system. See how the Ryan Galvin, Internet Explorer's General Manager, explains the reasoning over at the official blog; the link's just below.

Poll: Most Americans want payroll tax extension (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Most Americans want Congress to vote to continue the payroll tax reduction, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll that comes as Democrats and Republicans wrestle over whether to extend the cut through 2012.

It's the latest instance in which lawmakers on Capitol Hill have allowed partisan sniping to hold up a measure to put in place a policy that most Americans support, like ending the Bush tax cuts, cap and trade, and a surcharge on millionaires.

The dragged-out debate over whether to extend an expiring payroll tax reduction is one of many developments that have kept voters furious with their leaders all year. On the brink of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections, virtually all Americans are disappointed and frustrated with the political scene and nearly 6 in 10 say they are angry, the AP-GfK survey showed.

"It seems like there are parties that only want to get their agenda done," said liquor store owner James Jacobsen, 47, of East Hartford, Conn. "They're catering to special interests and not Americans. They are not representing the individual American."

Nearly 6 in 10 respondents say they want Congress to pass the extension, according to the poll. Letting the payroll tax break expire would cost a family making $50,000 about $1,000.

Yet, Republicans and Democrats are rejecting each other's proposals and trying to make law from what's left, a tactic they've used all year on debates over the budget and the nation's debt. The stalemates have caused a decline in confidence so severe that 15 percent of all adults and 32 percent of political independents say they don't trust either party to manage the federal budget deficit.

Economic discontent has spilled over into the political sphere all year and could influence the 2012 presidential and congressional elections. Occupy Wall Street and other protests against inequality have grabbed some attention from politicians, with Democrats the most supportive. Last week, a group of demonstrators camped out on the National Mall, crashed stately holiday parties and marched on Capitol Hill, demanding that Congress extend the payroll tax and insurance for the long-term unemployed.

On the payroll tax deduction, 58 percent of respondents said they want Congress to extend the break, while 35 percent want it to expire.

Democrats and independents are the strongest supporters of continuing the tax cut, while Republicans were evenly divided. But the difference is more partisan than ideological: Conservatives supported an extension, 54 percent to the 42 percent who prefer to let the reduction expire.

Those with annual incomes below $50,000 more strongly support the extension compared with higher-income respondents, and seniors were more likely than younger adults to back the extension.

On Wednesday, there was little sign Congress was listening.

Democrats who control the Senate rejected a GOP-ruled House plan to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, but only with cuts to spending and sped-up approval of an oil pipeline. The Senate is crafting its own proposal in response.

If an agreement is not reached by the end of the year, payroll taxes will jump on Jan. 1 from this year's 4.2 percent back to their normal level of 6.2 percent.

Americans are virtually out of patience, the polling shows. And their distrust crosses party lines.

"I really don't feel that they are having the best interests of us as a people," said Rogersville, Tenn., resident Andrea Stafford, 38, a single mother of two who has been unemployed since the summer.

"And when I say people," she added, "I don't mean millionaires and government officials. I'm talking about the normal person who gets up and fixes their children's lunch and has to take off work when their child is sick because we don't have nannies."

The AP-GfK poll found congressional approval near its all-time low and nearly all Americans disappointed with politics. Eighty-four percent of the respondents disapproved of the way Congress is doing its job, with at least 8 in 10 Republicans, Democrats and independents feeling that way.

As for how to balance the federal budget, more now favor cutting government services as the best means to bring federal spending into balance. Sixty percent think lawmakers should focus on budget cuts over tax increases. That figure had been as low as 53 percent in August, during the showdown over raising the country's debt limit.

The biggest shift on that question has come from independents. In the August poll, 37 percent said lawmakers should focus on increasing taxes and 42 percent said cutting services. Now, that divide stands at 28 percent for raising taxes and 59 percent for cutting services.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Dec. 8-12 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
