Despite the cold and rainy weather, 1,500 residents from the Kalamazoo area, including 50 breast cancer survivors, raised $108,000, while another 650 participants, including 60 breast cancer survivors, raised $50,000 in Muskegon on Oct. 13 for a total of $158,000 at their local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks to fight breast cancer and provide hope to those whose lives have been affected by this disease.
This noncompetitive event unites communities to honor breast cancer survivors, educate people about how to reduce their breast cancer risk, and raise funds to end breast cancer.
?Making Strides Against Breast Cancer unites us all to walk together as the most powerful force to end breast cancer,? said Crystal Parish, director for the American Cancer Society Southwest Michigan Office in Portage. ?We are so thankful for how our communities have pulled together to encourage everyone to change the course of breast cancer forever. Making Strides walkers and supporters can be proud that their efforts are helping 2.6 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. celebrate another birthday this year. Since Making Strides Against Breast Cancer began 20 years ago, the breast cancer death rate has dropped 32 percent. ?
The funds raised from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer help the Society provide free resources and support to the one in two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer who turn to the organization for help and support. Dollars raised also fund groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat and cure breast cancer, as well as help the Society ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.
Since 1993, 8 million walkers have raised more than $460 million through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Last year alone, one million walkers across the country collected $60 million to save lives from breast cancer. This fall, Michigan residents can participate in 18 walks throughout the state. The American Cancer Society encourages everyone to participate in this inspiring event.
The Society invests more in breast cancer research than in any other cancer type and has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough in recent history. For instance, Society-funded research has led to the discovery of lifesaving breast cancer treatments, including Tamoxifen and Herceptin. In addition, the money raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer allows the American Cancer Society to ensure all women to have access to mammograms and treatments ? regardless of income ? and makes it possible to provide free programs and services that improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. The Society is doing the most to help people with breast cancer today in every community and is working tirelessly to find cures to end the disease tomorrow, and is the only organization available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
