Samsung ships 20 million Galaxy S4s

Galaxy S4

Two months on, Samsung's shifted 20 million devices worldwide

Samsung has shifted 20 million Galaxy S4 smartphones in the just over two months since the device first went on sale, company co-CEO JK Shin has told the Korean press. To put that in perspective, the first month of availability for the S4 yielded 10 million shipments, while last year's Galaxy S3 took 100 days to reach the 20 million milestone.

Of course, shipping a phone isn't the same as selling it to an end-user. However shipped devices have to go somewhere, and the number shows that Samsung's partners at the very least are keen to snap up the device.

Samsung also reported Galaxy S4 sales of 500,000 in its domestic market of South Korea.

How Did It Take So Long to Make a Star Trek Phaser Laser Pointer?

How Did It Take So Long to Make a Star Trek Phaser Laser Pointer?

Combining a simple red laser pointer with a Star Trek phaser toy seems so incredibly obvious, but apparently it's taken this long for a clever entrepreneur to put those pieces together and come up with this adorable keychain that actually fires a glowing blast. That, or it's taken years to negotiate the Star Trek licensing rights.

But either way, it's here now, and ready to highlight important points in a PowerPoint presentation, annoy fellow movie going patrons at the next Trek film, or just fulfill all of your Captain Kirk roleplay fantasies.

With a $35 price tag it's of course not powerful enough to do any real damage?not like the many DIY versions you'll find online?and you'll have to provide your own sound effects. But that just makes it extra fun, right? PEW PEW PEW. [The Novo Geek via ThinkGeek]

Google Maps Street View Now Lets You Explore Thomas Jefferson's Digs

Nobody wants to spend their vacation day studying history, but if you're feeling particularly patriotic tomorrow, you can head on over to Google Maps where Thomas Jefferson's Monticello residence is now available to explore using Google Street View.

You can virtually wander around outside the property on its sprawling greens, or head indoors and explore everything from the main hall which doubled as a miniature museum, the dining room where he would have entertained other notable American figures, and his personal study which includes all of Jefferson's cutting-edge (at the time) gadgets. Best of all, you can do it all from the comfort of your hammock, lawn chair, or half-filled kiddie pool. [Google Maps Blog via Engadget]

AT&T updates privacy policy, may begin sharing anonymous user data

dnp AT&T to begin sharing anonymous user data

In an update on its Public Policy Blog, AT&T disclosed that it may begin selling anonymous user data to retailers and marketers, with the end goal being "to deliver more relevant advertising to... customers." The carrier is far from the first to sell aggregate information -- here's looking at you, Verizon -- but the provider is unique in combining data on TV, WiFi and wireless usage. The company said it could also provide aggregate info about users' app usage and U-Verse info.

Also notable in the new privacy policy: AT&T notes that it could sell information about individual users, with the stipulation that the data would still be kept anonymous, and media research companies would only be able to use that info in aggregate reports. While this is hardly a case of AT&T pushing new privacy boundaries, users can opt out of the program (see the second source link below).
