Qihoo?s iOS Apps Reportedly Removed For Violating Apple?s Rules

According to multiple sources cited in a Tencent QQ Tech report (link via Google Translate, h/t Tech In Asia), Apple removed all of Qihoo's apps from its App store last week for violating its terms of service. Qihoo said last week that it did not know the reason for the removals, which took place on January 26. In fact, the QQ Tech article claims that the apps were taken down manually, and there's no timeline for their return--a situation so serious that Qihoo's chief financial officer has reportedly flown over to the U.S. in an attempt to win back Apple's favor.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) ? An Iraq War veteran charged with murdering former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and a friend turned a gun on the pair while they were at a Texas shooting range, authorities said Sunday.

Eddie Ray Routh, of Lancaster, was arraigned early Sunday in the deaths of Kyle, who wrote the best-selling book "American Sniper," and Chad Littlefield, 35. They were killed at a shooting range at Rough Creek Lodge, about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Travis Cox, the director of a nonprofit Kyle helped found, told The Associated Press on Sunday that Kyle, 38, and Littlefield had taken Routh to the range to try to help him. Littlefield was Kyle's neighbor and "workout buddy," Cox said.

"What I know is Chris and a gentleman ? great guy, I knew him well, Chad Littlefield ? took a veteran out shooting who was struggling with PTSD to try to assist him, try to help him, try to, you know, give him a helping hand, and he turned the gun on both of them, killing them," Cox said.

Capt. Jason Upshaw with the Erath County Sheriff's Office said Routh had not made any comments that might indicate a motive. "I don't know that we'll ever know. He's the only one that knows that," Upshaw said.

Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Routh was unemployed and "may have been suffering from some type of mental illness from being in the military himself."

Bryant didn't know whether Routh was on any medication or had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Routh was being held on one charge of capital murder and two charges of murder.

Upshaw said officials believe Routh used a semi-automatic handgun, which authorities later found at his home. Upshaw said ballistics tests weren't complete Sunday, but authorities believe it was the gun used in the shootings. Upshaw declined to give any more details about the gun.

The U.S. military confirmed Sunday that Routh was a corporal in the Marines, serving in active duty from 2006 to 2010. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and Haiti in 2010. His current duty status is listed as reserve.

Routh is being held on $3 million bond. Bryant said he believed Routh was in the process of seeking a public defender.

A knock on the door at Routh's last known address went unanswered Sunday. A for-sale sign was in front of the small, wood-framed home.

Kyle's best-selling book, "American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History," detailed his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009. Kyle said in his book that Iraqi insurgents had put a bounty on his head. According to promotional information from book publisher William Morrow, Kyle deployed to Iraq four times.

Bryant said Kyle, Littlefield and Routh went to the shooting range around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. A hunting guide at Rough Creek Lodge came across the bodies of Kyle and Littlefield around 5 p.m. and called 911.

Upshaw said autopsies were still pending and he could not say how many times the men were shot or where on their bodies they were hit.

After the shootings, Routh left the shooting range in Kyle's black pickup truck, Bryant said, first going to his sister's home in Midlothian, about 25 miles southwest of Dallas, where he told her and her husband what he had done. Routh left, Bryant said, and the couple called local police.

Routh arrived at his home in Lancaster, about 17 miles southeast of Dallas, at about 8 p.m. Police arrested him after a brief pursuit.

Kyle's nonprofit, FITCO Cares, provides at-home fitness equipment for emotionally and physically wounded veterans.

"Chris was literally the type of guy, if you were a veteran and needed help, he'd help you," said Cox, the director of FITCO Cares.

Cox described Littlefield as a gentle, kind-hearted man who often called or emailed him with ideas for events or fundraisers to help veterans. He said he was married and had children.

"It was just two great guys, with Chad and Chris trying to help out a veteran in need and making time out of their day to help him. And to give him a hand. And unfortunately this thing happened," Cox said.

Bryant expressed a similar understanding of the situation. The sheriff said Routh's mother "may have reached out to Mr. Kyle to try to help her son."

"We kind of have an idea that maybe that's why they were at the range for some type of therapy that Mr. Kyle assists people with. And I don't know if it's called shooting therapy, I don't have any idea," Bryant said.

Lt. Cmdr. Rorke Denver, who served with Kyle on SEAL Team 3 in Iraq in 2006, called Kyle a champion of the modern battlefield. Denver wasn't surprised that Kyle apparently used a shooting range to help someone with PTSD.

"For us, for warriors, that's a skill set that has become very familiar, very comfortable for us," said Denver, a lieutenant commander in a reserve SEAL team. His book "Damn Few," about training SEALs, will be released this month. "So I actually see it as kind of a perfect use of Chris' unique skill set and expertise of which he has very few peers."

Craft International, Kyle's security training company, had scheduled a $2,950-per-person civilian training event at Rough Creek Lodge called the "Rough Creek Shoot Out!" for March 1-3. The price included lodging, meals and shooting instruction. Kyle was scheduled to teach the first class, called "precision rifle."

Kyle is survived by his wife, Taya, and their two children, Cox said.

?Discount pet drugs?no prescription required? may appeal to pet owners surfing the Web, but FDA experts say it can be risky to buy drugs online from sites that tout this message and others like it.

Some of the Internet sites that sell pet drugs represent legitimate, reputable pharmacies, says Martine Hartogensis, D.V.M., deputy director of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance in FDA?s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). But others are fronts for unscrupulous businesses operating against the law.

FDA has found companies that sell unapproved pet drugs and counterfeit pet products, make fraudulent claims, dispense prescription drugs without requiring a prescription, and sell expired drugs.

Pet owners who purchase drugs from these companies may think they are saving money, says Hartogensis, but in reality, they may be short-changing their pet?s health and putting its life at risk.

CVM regulates the manufacture and distribution of animal drugs, while individual state pharmacy boards regulate the dispensing of prescription veterinary products.

Red Flags

Some foreign Internet pharmacies advertise that veterinary prescription drugs are available to U.S. citizens without a prescription. But, says Hartogensis, ?There is a risk of the drugs not being FDA-approved.?

A foreign or domestic pharmacy may claim that one of its veterinarians on staff will ?evaluate? the pet after looking over a form filled out by the pet owner, and then prescribe the drug. ?A veterinarian should physically examine an animal prior to making a diagnosis to determine the appropriate therapy,? says Hartogensis.

CVM is especially concerned that pet owners are going online to buy two types of commonly used prescription veterinary drugs?nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and heartworm preventives.

?Both drugs can be dangerous if there is no professional involvement,? says Hartogensis. ?It?s not generally a concern if the owner uses a legitimate online pharmacy and mails in a prescription from their veterinarian, who is monitoring the animal. But if there is no veterinarian?client?patient relationship, it?s a dangerous practice.?

NSAIDS and Heartworm Preventives

Veterinarians often prescribe NSAIDs to relieve pain in dogs. NSAIDs should not be purchased on the Internet without a veterinarian?s involvement because

• dogs should undergo blood testing and a thorough physical examination before starting NSAIDs
• dogs should be monitored by a veterinarian while they are taking NSAIDs
• veterinarians should discuss possible side effects of NSAIDs with the owner
• the prescription should be accompanied by a Client Information Sheet that explains important safety information to the owner

Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal condition transmitted by the bite of a mosquito that is carrying infected larvae of the heartworm parasite. Dogs, cats, and ferrets can get heartworm. Heartworm preventives, given daily, monthly, or semiannually, depending on the product, kill the larvae before they become adult worms.

The American Heartworm Society recommends

• using heartworm medication for dogs year-round, no matter where you live in the United States
• getting dogs tested yearly to make sure they?re not infected with heartworm

?Testing is important even in dogs regularly treated with heartworm preventive products due to the occasional reports of product ineffectiveness,? says Hartogensis. An Internet pharmacy veterinarian cannot draw blood from the animal to perform the test. If the test isn?t done, a pet owner could be giving heartworm preventives to a dog that has heartworms, potentially leading to severe reactions.

Tips for Buying Pet Drugs Online

• Order from a Web site that belongs to a Vet-VIPPS accredited pharmacy. Vet-VIPPS?the Veterinary-Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites?is a voluntary accreditation program of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). NABP gives the Vet-VIPPS seal to online pharmacies that dispense prescription animal drugs and comply with NABP?s strict criteria, including federal and state licensing and inspection requirements, protecting patient confidentiality, quality assurance, and validity of prescription orders. Look for the Vet-VIPPS seal displayed on a pharmacy?s Web site or check with NABP⁵ (click on ?Accreditation Programs?) to find out if a pharmacy is Vet-VIPPS accredited. Because this is a new program, begun in 2009, a small number of pharmacies are currently Vet-VIPPS accredited.
• Order from an outsourced prescription management service that your veterinarian uses. These state-licensed Internet pharmacy services work directly with the veterinarian, require that a prescription be written by the veterinarian, and support the veterinarian-client-patient relationship. Ask your veterinary hospital if it uses an Internet pharmacy service.

U.S., Mexico in weekend talks on tomato pact

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Commerce Department officials and Mexican tomato growers on Saturday were in intense talks aimed at reaching a deal to govern tomato trade between the two countries, a Commerce Department official said.

The two sides hope to reach an agreement by a Monday deadline, the official told Reuters, while declining to characterize how close the two sides were.

The department made a preliminary decision in September to terminate a 1996 U.S.-Mexico tomato trade agreement after Florida growers complained the arrangement did not protect them against Mexican tomatoes sold below the cost of production.

Mexican growers export about $1.9 billion worth of tomatoes to the United States each year. They say Florida producers have not kept pace with new growing techniques that have produced a tastier Mexican tomato and propelled sales in the United States.

The two sides now are discussing a price at which Mexico can sell its tomatoes in the United States without giving them what Florida growers say is an unfair advantage.

Terminating the trade agreement would clear the way for Florida growers to file a new anti-dumping case against Mexico, possibly leading to steep punitive duties on the imports. U.S. business groups say such action would cause tomato prices to soar for American consumers.

The decision to end the trade agreement upset Mexican growers, who had offered to renegotiate the pact. They argue the agreement has benefited U.S. consumers and brought stability to the North American market.

Mexican officials said the U.S. move appeared to be motivated by a desire to help President Barack Obama carry Florida in his election battle against Republican Mitt Romney. Obama did win the state in the November contest.

The department's preliminary decision to terminate the agreement becomes final in early March. However, the effective deadline for the two sides to reach a new deal is Monday, since the department is require to give interested parties 30 days to comment.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and some other U.S. business groups have sided with Mexico in the dispute, fearing Mexico could retaliate on U.S. exports if the Commerce Department imposes hefty anti-dumping duties on Mexican tomatoes.

Bus hits overpass in Boston, injuring dozens

BOSTON (AP) ? Massachusetts State Police say high school students and their adult chaperones were on a charter bus after a visit to Harvard University when the oversized bus crashed into a bridge in Boston.

The bus crashed about 7:30 p.m. Saturday as it was passing under a bridge on Soldier's Field Road, a major crosstown road. The group was returning to the Philadelphia area.

The injured, three seriously, were taken to hospitals. The group was on the way back to Pennsylvania.

Authorities say the bus did not belong on that road and state police are investigating whether charges are warranted against the driver after apparently failing to see the sign prohibiting the vehicle from taking that route. The bus company had no immediate comment.

CP+ 2013 wrap-up: brochure models, Japanese dancers and point-and-shoots aplenty

Despite an unfortunate lack of product introductions, largely due to the recent influx of new models at Photokina, there was plenty of excitement on the floor at Japan's annual CP+ trade show. The promise of new point-and-shoots brought us out to Yokohama, but non-stop manufacturer-sponsored entertainment at the exhibition hall, most often not in any way related to the devices on display, kept us coming back.

At Nikon's booth, Japanese dancers clad in a variety of "urban" dress, remained in constant motion in an effort to demonstrate the autofocus abilities of the company's latest 1 Series cameras. At dozens of other stands, models, often surrounded by groups of attendees, held camera brochures in an array of different poses.
