Ending the holiday season on Church Street, the tree occupying the top block was dismantled and partially saved to be used in an upcoming charity project. The large tree, that came from a couple's front yard in Winooski, lit up downtown Burlington for the month of December. Workers cut down the tree Wednesday, much of it being chopped down to wood chips. The trunk of the tree was saved for the first time, to be broken down into usable wood for a Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity project. The project will be in Winooski, allowing the tree to go back to its original home."When we take down Christmas trees it can be a sad time. ... What's nice is that this tree will live on," Habitat Director of Advancement Sara Munro said.Construction on the new project, a duplex on Mallets Bay Avenue, is slated to begin this spring.
