-Cancellation insurance: A couple of years ago, I was headed towards Japan on the same day that the huge earthquake and tsunami hit.. as you can imagine, I never made it there. Once I reached Chicago, all flights were cancelled for several days and we ended up having to make last minute changes and head to Florida instead. We had flights, hotel rooms, and other arrangements planned and paid. As you can imagine insurance can make a huge difference in such cases.
-Health Insurance: Unfortunately, as happy and relaxed as we are on vacations, bad things can sometimes happen that include medical emergencies. In some countries that can mean huge bills which you ideally don?t have to worry about too much. Having good travel insurance can make a big difference.

I would caution you to find out exactly what type of coverage you currently have as some credit cards, work insurance programs or other policies that you have might apply during vacations

When you?re leaving for a couple of weeks, the difference between a good and well priced insurance and an average one is not usually significant. If you?re staying for an extended amount of time though, you might end up getting an inferior policy that will cost thousands more if you?re not careful about it?
