Tax-free workout clothes, new - Health Blog

Even the Olympians had to start somewhere (Staff Photo/Vernon Bryant)

Ah, tax-free weekend ? the perfect excuse for buying (in addition to Mary Jane shoes and bobby sox) workout gear! Buy most wearable items that cost less than $100, and you don?t pay sales tax.

The days are getting shorter, too, so if you like working out when the sun?s but a memory, you don?t have to totally throw off your dinner hour by having to wait, wait, wait until you don?t need sunglasses.

OK, enough jabbering. Here?s some stuff to keep you entertained and at least on the path to fitness (with cute new duds).

1. Save money on workout gear I hear Nike is opening a new Factor Store in Grand Prairie?s Paragon Outlets , 2959 W. Interstate 20 this week. Be one of the first 200 shoppers today through Sunday and get a gift.
Also, Run On stores have savings on clothes and shoes that bring them under that magical $100 number. Click here for more info.

2. Head to Fort Worth for tacos. Oh yeah, did we mention you have to run to get them? It?s Luke?s Locker?s Shed to Shack fun run and walk. Start and finish at Tim Love?s Woodshed. In between, go five miles or five kilometers. Click here for more info.

3. Learn something new. You may not be starting school in a week or so, but maybe you sense the learning bug in the air.
I wish I?d grabbed it before trying my lone triathlon ? ?trying? being the operative word. I got panicky before I even got into the lake, and as you might imagine, was subsequently not particularly happy with myself.
Save yourself such silliness and at least look into a class such as Playtri Club. It meets at 7 a.m. Saturday; click here for more info such as ? oh yeah, where.

Or try some beach volleyball; I did some investigative reporting, and saw this place, Champion Beach Volleyball in Deep Ellum. If you think you?re not good enough to just start playing, you can even take lessons.

4. Stop at Lady Foot Locker on your Saturday mall walk. Lady Foot Locker is celebrating its remodeled digs at NorthPark Center with a daylong event Saturday.
Pop in between 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a fitness fashion show and fitness tips, plus visits from massage therapists and makeup artists. I confess to neither watching nor being familiar with the Style Network?s Empire Girls (nor, quite frankly, Style Network itself). But those who are more hip than I can meet singer and star Adrienne Bailon.

So there you have it. Sweat, cool off, hydrate, enjoy.
